Chapter 5.2, Arc 1: Strange Sounds in the Morgue

Glancing at the bandage on his hand, An Ling’s eyes softened as if he was looking at the most precious treasure in the world.

This was wrapped by Doctor Yao himself.

Every time he thought of this, An Ling’s heart would involuntarily speed up. It was almost like this bandage linked him to Dr. Yao. He even hoped that his wound would never get better so that he could have an excuse to approach his beloved Doctor Yao.

Although it was shameful, this was the only way for him to get close to Doctor Yao, who was farther above him than the clouds in the sky.

He was indeed a despicable villain… But he felt so happy. How was it possible for him to feel this much happiness?

An Ling put all the cleaning tools back in the janitor’s closet and then sat on the bench inside to rest. He gazed at the bandage on his hand and the corners of his mouth rose upwards. It was obviously a very innocent smile, but in the dark and musty janitor’s closet, it appeared a bit obsessive.

He really loved Dr. Yao… For Dr. Yao, he was willing to do anything…

Patter

As Yao Ye walked towards the morgue, his leather shoes made a crisp echo every time he stepped on the smooth, damp floor.

The morgue was located on the basement level of Renai Hospital. No sunshine reached down here all year round, so the air was always extremely humid and carried an inexplicable fishy smell. It was unknown whether it was the smell of rotting corpses or something else.

Yao Ye’s nose itched. He kept trying to sneeze it out but couldn’t, making him feel even more stifled.

He really didn’t expect that this luxuriously decorated private hospital would have such a dilapidated morgue.

Yao Ye came down in the elevator. After coming out of the elevator, there was a corridor leading to the morgue which had only a single dim incandescent lightbulb hanging from the ceiling to illuminate the entire corridor. It was cold and dingy, and the walls were covered with water stains of unknown origin.

It could be seen that the tiles had been cleaned carefully, but even so, this corridor still gave people a dirty feeling.

Yao Ye spent a good deal of time psyching himself up before he overcame the shadow in his heart caused by the female ghost this morning. He carefully made a few tiny steps into the corridor, afraid that a monster would suddenly appear and come after him.

There was already one ghost haunting him. If he gained a few more, he wouldn’t need to bother living anymore and just go directly kill himself.

“Mister An? Are you there? Mister An?” Yao Ye mustered up his courage to shout, but no one responded. Only his own voice echoed in the empty morgue.

F*ck, this was too scary.

Yao Ye was scared enough by his own echo. He’d sound a retreat for today and come back next time. Mister An must not be in right now or he would’ve heard him and replied, right?

With this thought, Yao Ye stopped walking and was ready to go back. He didn’t want to go into the morgue at all. This year he kept having bad luck, so let’s not go to the morgue to get into even more trouble.

Bzzt bzzt

The incandescent lightbulb on the ceiling flickered a few times, emitting an electric buzzing sound.

Yao Ye was just about to turn around when he noticed a figure out of the corner of his eyes, standing in the shadows under the fluctuating light for an unknown amount of time.

Yao Ye did not dare to even breathe. He froze with his body twisted halfway around, squinting his eyes to carefully look again.

The dark shadow at the end of the corridor stayed motionless. Its limbs were like a normal human’s, but somehow gave off a sense of wrongness.

Was it a living person?

Yao Ye’s heart drummed in his chest. His keen sixth sense made him afraid to even make a sound, let alone run away. The dark figure was also inexplicably motionless. The two sides were momentarily deadlocked.

Yao Ye was so panicked at this point that he felt for the first time his courage was smaller than a mouse’s. His breathing grew shallower and shallower.

It must be said that many people who say they would never believe in ghosts and monsters are often more afraid of such things than those who are already superstitious, but deny it for the simple reason that if they ever actually encountered anything—they would be scared out of their wits.

Facing the sudden appearance of the dark shadow, Yao Ye’s face went as pale as death. He was sweating buckets, full of regret.

He knew that the morgue was haunted, so why did he have to come down alone? Did he think he wouldn’t die fast enough?

Bzzt bzzt

The incandescent light above his head flashed faster. Yao Ye’s eyes were about to cramp, but he did not dare to look away for a second. He might never have eaten pork but he’d seen pigs run[1]; although he did not believe in ghosts before, he’d still seen his fair share of horror movies. If he blinked right now, something would definitely happen.

Eventually, Yao Ye couldn’t resist blinking, and in the next second an abnormal change came over the dark shadow. It suddenly advanced from where it had been standing still, its legs rapidly cycling but its upper body remaining immobile. Its movements were strange and terrifying, embodying the uncanny valley effect to the extreme.

Yao Ye was so frightened that he immediately started sprinting away, not even daring to look back.

The sound of footsteps shadowed behind him, getting closer and closer.

Yao Ye was in despair. He felt certain that his life was going to end right here and now.

Was he f*cking acting in a horror movie!? This was so much fun! He can run into ghosts wherever he goes!

Tap, tap, tap

With the sound of footsteps almost within reach, Yao Ye looked at the elevator doors that were about to open and pressed the elevator button desperately, only to hear a “ding” before the doors gave way.

The sound behind him abruptly stopped, but Yao Ye didn’t dare to think about the situation in the corridor. He dashed forward and collapsed into the elevator. He was so scared that his vision went black at the edges and his heart pumped so hard it felt like it would burst out of his chest.

He thought he would fall directly to the ground and readied for the pain. Instead, he found himself being held in someone’s arms after crashing into them.

Huh? Who was this?

Yao Ye glanced at the familiar blue uniform in front of him and froze. When he looked up, a face with a black birthmark came into view. The owner of the face was staring straight at him with red cheeks and seemed surprised as well.

It was An Ling.

Yao Ye stared at An Ling in wonder, so relieved that he had to stop himself from throwing himself at the man and kissing him smack dab on the lips. Buddy, you really came at the perfect time!
