Chapter 1.2, Arc 1: Strange Sounds in the Morgue

Suddenly, the sound of hot water trickling into the cup interrupted the nurses’ chat, awkwardly echoing in the empty service corridor.

“Goodness!”

Sister Li, the head nurse with her hair tied up in a neat bun, had been engrossed in conversation. At that moment, she received such a fright that she lurched forwards and her heart almost stopped. She turned her head, a scolding on the tip of her tongue before she realized it was a recent arrival who was filling his cup at the water dispenser. Facing the hospital’s new resident, Yao Ye, she could only choke back her harsh words.

This kid was introduced by the dean and wasn’t someone she could rashly offend. She had no choice but to bear it.

Seeing that she was scared, Yao Ye smiled awkwardly and said, “I’m sorry, I thought you saw me. The water dispenser in the office is empty so I came out to get some water.”

Sister Li smiled as she corrected her somewhat crooked nurse hat and waved her hand, “It’s okay, it’s okay, we were too caught up in conversation just now.”

“It’s so late, Xiao[1] Yao, you still haven’t gotten off work yet? When you’re going home later, you have to be careful!” The other middle-aged nurse next to her also smiled. She had always been fond of Yao Ye, a young man with skin so tender it looked like it would squeeze out water if pinched. A gentle smile on his attractive face could make anyone feel warm and comforted.

“Yeah, Yao Ye, your dark circles have been getting worse recently. Make sure you get enough rest.” The young nurse Yu Yi, who had been quietly smiling and listening to the others gossiping, looked at Yao Ye with an adoring expression on her dainty features, her shining eyes particularly ardent.

Yu Yi was the hospital’s famous ‘flower high atop a mountain peak’. She had countless pursuers but declined them all with the same sincere appearance. Only Yao Ye, a recently-arrived resident, was treated differently; the implication behind her constant affectionate glances was clear to everyone. Yao Ye used to be ostracized by the colleagues that were jealous of him, causing him considerable stress for quite a while. It was only a few days ago that his uncle, the dean of the hospital, had to step in to settle the matter.

Faced with the concern of this beauty who had brought down disaster upon his innocent self, Yao Ye only felt goosebumps all over his body. Even the sores in his mouth started hurting a bit more. Uncomfortable, he gave her a cursory response and then took the water and left, unwilling to stay for a second longer.

Yu Yi’s expression darkened as she watched Yao Ye turn his back and run as if he was fleeing for his life. Her fingernails bit into her palms and she stomped her foot in anger, inwardly cursing this dense idiot who couldn’t take a hint.

Yao Ye, who had managed to escape, didn’t know of Yu Yi’s anger and frustration. Even if he knew, he wouldn’t pay much attention to it. He had always been a person who didn’t like socializing. To others, he gave off the aura of a refined scholar in deep contemplation.

He held the cup he had just filled with hot water and touched his cheek again, tortured by the ulcers on the inner wall of his mouth. He exhaled sharply in pain. The more he wanted to hurry home after getting off work, the faster his steps became.

“Bang!”

Ouch

Yao Ye, who was focused on rushing back to the office to pack up his things and clock out, didn’t notice a person walking around the corner of the corridor and crashed bodily into them.

In an instant, Yao Ye felt his head rebound into a wall. Bright sparks appeared in his vision from the heavy impact.

He fell to the ground, and hot water spilled from the cup in his hand. The person could not dodge, and the hot water splashed on their arm, emitting a dense cloud of steam.

The lethality of just-boiled hot water directly contacting skin could not be underestimated. The person groaned in pain, and the exposed skin quickly began to redden and blister.

The man’s muffled noise jolted Yao Ye out of his state of shock. Ignoring his injured ankle, he stepped forward and looked at the severe burn, apologizing anxiously, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! Don’t move, I’ll go get medicine to treat the wound! No, no, let’s take a look at the injury first, if the underlying tissue is affected, it will be serious…”

Yao Ye shakily approached the person he had scalded and looked up, catching sight of their face. Only then did he recognize who it was. Standing before him was the hospital’s night security guard— An Ling.

The author has something to say: Finally a new novel, thank you little angels who are still waiting! Love you~

This story is purely fictitious, modern overhead, and many supernatural details have fictional components. Some parts of the hospital may also have errors. If there is any deviation, please understand QAQ
