Chapter 16.1, Arc 1: Strange Sounds in the Morgue

“He’s probably not really crazy…”

Watching the doctor talk to what looked like empty air, Baseball Cap felt goose bumps rise all over his body. “Or maybe there’s a ghost over there?”

Hoodie, trembling head to foot with fear, sobbed, “Boss, I already told you not to scare me, it took me forever to just barely be able to relax!”

The moment he finished speaking, they both saw that inside the originally empty corner, a tall figure with an extremely oppressive aura appeared out of nowhere. The two were scared sh*tless.

Baseball Cap and Hoodie hugged the cases of baijiu close to their chests and stared at the ghostly figure in a security guard uniform who materialized not far away, faces full of horror.

It was now a proven fact that Yao Ye hadn’t gone crazy at all, but rather they were the ones about to lose their minds.

Wasn’t this the ghost of the security guard from the urban legend!?!?!

No wonder they hadn’t seen any ghosts again the whole night, it turned out there had already been one here waiting for them!

Hoodie was so frightened that his legs went soft under him. The baijiu he was carrying fell to the ground, clanking noisily as all the bottles rolled out of the case.

“Ahhh!!! Run, dage!!!”

About to piss his pants in terror, Hoodie scrambled out from the corner of the service desk. He turned to look behind him and to his surprise, he found that the doctor was standing together with the ghostly shadow.

“N-no, what the f*ck?!”

Hoodie’s three views suffered a huge blow upon witnessing the doctor’s next move and were on the verge of falling apart. The expression on his face went uncontrollably blank.

Baseball Cap, who was running beside Hoodie, also turned his head to look. Shock flashed across his entire face at once before it crumbled.

“That doctor! He—!!! He—!!! They—!”

Not far away, the young man wearing a white coat had lifted his head and was kissing the ghost of the security guard on the cheek while the other was deliberately leaning down. The sight of the pale pink lips almost seeming to meld together with the black fog that covered the ghostly security guard’s face appeared incredibly terrifying.

Taking in this unimaginable scene, Hoodie’s legs could not help but tremble.

“Those two are… they’re in that kind of relationship? This f*cking urban legend, everything it said is fake! Dage… we’re done for…”

Hoodie had never thought it would turn out that the ghost of the security guard who adored the female nurse heart and soul in the urban legend was, as a matter of fact, in love with a male doctor.

Recalling their previous contemptuous treatment and disrespect towards the doctor, Hoodie fell into despair.

It was over, it was all over. Could they still get out alive after offending the Ghost King’s lingering obsession?

It had to be known that just a moment ago they were even planning to pit the doctor. It should also be known that the doctor will absolutely not let them get away with it!

Baseball Cap had evidently thought this far as well. His already fragile mental state immediately shattered into pieces and his expression turned insane.

“Damn it, this guy backstabbed us! He’s been playing with us! What ‘burning the corpse’! It was all fake… F*ck! We’re already dead anyways, laozi is going to take them down with me!”

Gone berserk, Baseball Cap recklessly pulled out a small switchblade from his pocket and charged over to where Yao Ye was standing near the service desk.

Hoodie watched his family’s dage suddenly go crazy. Unable to comprehend what was happening, he couldn’t even react.

“Ahhhh! Doctor! Laozi will take you down with me!”

The resentment that had been accumulating since last night made Baseball Cap completely lose his mind. All he was thinking was that if he was going to die, he must drag along someone else to share his fate. Even the tall ghostly shadow standing close beside Yao Ye was entirely overlooked. The sole focus of his red eyes was to kill Yao Ye.

Yao Ye had just put forward his request to An Ling. However, An Ling didn’t seem to want to leave his side, and so had no intention of setting about the task.

Upon seeing this, Yao Ye was helpless. He had no choice but to think hard about how to composedly persuade An Ling to leave while he runs out of the door at the right time.

Immersed in his thoughts, Yao Ye was caught off guard and even jumped with fright when he heard Baseball Cap’s voice.

Yao Ye turned around for a look and found Baseball Cap already right before his eyes. Yao Ye’s pupils constricted. In the next second, a bloody mist exploded in the air.

A big hand covered in burn scars shielded over Yao Ye’s face, protecting him from being dirtied by blood.

Droplets of blood splattered onto Yao Ye’s poor, tortured white doctor’s coat and appeared to blossom like blood-red spider lilies[1].

DripDrip—streams of blood flowed.

The headless corpse fell to the ground. Evil spirits summoned by the Ghost King, each one more hideous and sinister than the last, crouched over the dead body and fed from its flesh and blood.

Yao Ye was stunned for a moment. By the time that An Ling dropped his hand, he had managed to wrench his gaze away from the corpse with great difficulty. He smiled weakly.

“Thank you.”

Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! ! !

He had to escape! ! !

An Ling tenderly stroked the soft strands of Yao Ye’s hair, comforting his frightened lover.

Sensing the gentle strength on top of his head, Yao Ye hiding his trembling fingers behind his back, his face pale.

“Ahhhh!!!”

A mournful scream pierced through the quiet atmosphere in the lobby. Tears and snot streamed down Hoodie’s face as he watched Baseball Cap die before his eyes. Out of his mind with fear, he ran into the depths of the corridor.

A short while later, there was another blood-curdling screech that quickly broke off, followed by—the joyous clamor of monsters as a sumptuous feast began.

Blankly staring down the corridor, Yao Ye couldn’t stop his body from instinctively retreating back a step. Neither could his face conceal the fear and grief he had been repressing.

Everyone was dead…

Now, inside this ghost hospital, only he was left…

Would the next one to die be him?

Thud—

Thud

An Ling took Yao Ye’s hand and led him step by step into the depths of the hospital, a happy, contented smile on his handsome face.

“Dr. Yao, we will be together forever.”

Hearing this sentence that An Ling had repeated many times before in a voice brimming with adoration, Yao Ye subconsciously raised his head to see An Ling’s face flushed a feverish red.

The dread in his heart suddenly reached the breaking point. He couldn’t keep enduring it anymore. Exhausting all the strength in his body to shake off An Ling’s hand, he turned and bolted towards the main entrance of the hospital in the distance.

No, it would never happen! ! !

He didn’t want to stay here for the rest of his life! He had to get out!

His life could not be futilely spent staying inside this haunted place with no sunlight or hope, waiting to suffer a painful death!

Even if it meant dying, he didn’t want to be trapped here!

“Dr. Yao…”

An Ling’s voice seemed to be filled with plaintive incomprehension.

“Why do you want to run away?”

“…Is staying here no good…? We…could be happy…forever…”

A ghost’s voice would always carry a whisper of compulsion.

An Ling’s bewitching voice lingered behind him as he ran like a sickness invading his bones.

Yao Ye didn’t dare to turn his head back for fear that his will would succumb to the sound. He just kept sprinting forward desperately.

It wasn’t until the taste of blood coated the back of his throat that his palm finally touched the handle of the hospital’s glass doors.

Thud—

But the sound of footsteps coming from behind him had also stopped at Yao Ye’s side.

A big hand covered in scorch wounds and still continuously seeping blood reached out to cover Yao Ye’s pale hand that was on the verge of opening the door.

“Stay… I love you ah…”

The tall ghost spoke in a low voice, as if begging for mercy from his lover.

The damp feeling on the back of his hand made Yao Ye’s heart tremble. He felt distressed for the pain that An Ling had suffered, but the bright sunlight outside the door had already captured his heart and soul.

He had no time to care about anything else.

“Let me go, An Ling! I’m sorry!”

Without knowing exactly why, Yao Ye burst into tears.

He forcefully pushed open the door and threw himself forward in the same motion. Taking no heed of the scrape on his arm from hitting the ground, Yao Ye sprang back up to his feet. Only when he had run more than fifty meters away from the hospital doors did he dare to look back.

He was met with the sight of countless ghosts rushing forth in droves out of the entrance of the hospital. Among them was an especially conspicuous tall ghostly shadow standing in front of the door, lonely and desolate.

Whooshthe autumn wind howled, dispersing the flickering shadows of ghosts in front of the doors, revealing the true appearance of the hospital.

This was a hospital that was destroyed by flames. Ash-gray exterior walls and an empty concrete shell were the only remnants left behind.

Yao Ye stared at the abandoned hospital, then bent over and took in big gulps of fresh air until he noticed a tingling in his lungs. Distractedly, he let out a slow breath.

He… escaped?

He actually… escaped?

Yao Ye retreated a few steps, somehow feeling disappointed and frustrated as if he’d lost something. Then, he turned around and ran in the direction of his apartment building without another look back.

He wanted to go home.

He just wanted to go home.

Yao Ye has already died, hasn’t he? I’m guessing that he died because of the fever when he was sick at that time. That’s why the hospital director’s voice sounded strange when Yao Ye asked sick leave via phone, because he can’t believe he got a phone call from a dead person.
